It’s early in the year which means its a perfect time to get our hopes up for things that will most likely get pushed back into 2010 or cancelled completely. I’ve done a fair amount of digging around the tubes and found some interesting tidbits concerning a few of my favorite musical groups.
I’ll start guns blazing. It appears that Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) has stated that he was going back to make the new QotSA album along with remastering the self-titled release from ‘98 and is aiming for an early 2009 shelf date. Apparently this was revealed in an issue of NME back in September so I guess we’ll just wait and see what happens.
Weezer has also been tooling around in the studio and has a b-side album currently in the works. It is being referred to as Odds and Ends as of now and is not yet dated but come on, how long can a b-side album take. They are also planning to tour with Oasis later this year.
Moving right along. Matt Bellamy of Muse has said, regarding the bands upcoming album,
It would be nice to have the album out in the second half of next year (2009) but we have not set ourselves any targets. It is more important for us to make the best album we have made to date and if that means it comes out in 2010 then we don’t mind. Hopefully it will be sooner though.
The album has been in the works since last year and has been said to be leaning toward a more electonic sound, probably similar to Supermassive Black Hole from their 2006 release Black Holes and Revelations. Bellamy has also said, in an interview with NME back in April, that he would like to make something similar to Rage Against the Machine and Dominic Howard, the groups drummer, has stated that they’ve already completed a few tracks.
In 2007, two years after System of a Down had broken apart, Serj Tankian put out a solo album. A good album in its own right but it had too much of a SoaD feel without the power of a SoaD album. Now in 2009 Serj plans to release a second album, something of a jazz orchestral and has said that he has an orchestra that is interested.
I’m structuring the next record kind of like a jazz orchestral. I’ve got a full orchestra interested, so I want this giant electric guitar in the air to be played by a full orchestra. I want the orchestra to be the electric guitar. I want to make an orchestra do what it’s never done before, like a GG Allin type orchestra. Think of that.
To be honest I’m fairly excited and very curious as to what this will sound like. If anyone is familiar with Serart, a solo project Tankian did in ‘03, you know that he can pull off different musical styles well.
I’ll leave you with that and remember to check the “Whats What in 2009″ page for a more extensive list of this years releases.
